b. 1795 – Georgia
Governor: 1847–1849
After serving in the Georgia legislature, Wood moved to Texas. In 1839, he chartered the sloop Marshall to transport family, slaves, and household items to settle at Point Blank on the Trinity River where he managed a plantation and ran a mercantile business.
After serving as state representative and senator, Wood was elected governor but was defeated by Peter Hansborough Bell in large part due to his failure to resolve the border dispute with New Mexico. Anti-Houston forces also viewed him as a Houston supporter.
