The southeast bedroom was designated the Sam Houston bedroom, the second official state bedroom, in 1982. The Sam Houston bed and Sam Houston memorabilia were placed in this room when the Mansion Collection returned to the house following the 1979-1982 restoration/renovation.

Today, the Sam Houston bed is the central piece in the room and one of the most historically significant pieces in the Mansion. The bed is thought to have been purchased with state funds during the Houston administration (1859-1861) and to have been in the Mansion since that time. A plaque was placed on it by First Lady Sallie Culberson in 1899 to identify it for future generations.
